The Russia Tower ( Russian Башня Россия Baschnja Rossija ) was a planned skyscraper in Moscow , which was to be built as part of the new Moscow City business center .

history

The plans for the building go back to the 1990s. However, it was only announced in March 2006 that the building was planned to be built within the Moscow City business center. The 118-story building was designed by British architect Norman Foster . With a height of 612 meters. it was to become the second tallest building in the world , after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (completed in 2010 at 828 meters). It would also have surpassed the Chicago Spire by six feet. In the lower area of the skyscraper, which resembles a spearhead, offices were planned, in the middle a hotel, and higher up luxurious apartments were to be built; 101 elevators were planned in the building. The investment volume was estimated at 1.5 billion US dollars, and completion was scheduled for 2012.

The groundbreaking took place on September 18, 2007. In autumn 2008, however, the foundation work that had begun and the preparation of the subsoil had to be stopped due to financial problems.

Construction freeze

On November 21, 2008, the construction work had to be interrupted due to the financial difficulties caused by the international economic crisis . In the meantime there were various alternative plans for the building. In the spring of 2009 the construction project was then completely canceled due to ongoing financial problems. The Russia Tower is an example of construction projects that fell victim to the financial crisis from 2007 onwards.

Current development

In January 2012 it was reported that the Moscow administration had decided to continue construction and finish it by 2016, although the height of the tower is to be reduced to 360 meters. However, no further details were known until spring 2014. It is therefore unclear whether the building will ever be built.
