The Chicago Spire (former project name Fordham Spire ) is a skyscraper in Chicago whose construction began in the summer of 2007 and was discontinued in the fall of 2008. The building, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava , was to be the tallest building in the United States with a height of 610 meters . Completion was originally planned for 2012. It is unlikely that the building will continue to be constructed as the property is currently for sale.

The design was changed several times between 2005 and the final approval of the plans by the city on May 12, 2007. After the cancellation of the hotel, which was originally supposed to occupy the top 20 floors, only apartments are finally planned, which would make the Spire the highest pure residential building on earth . Other changes included the shape of the tip, which was widened in the last draft to gain space, and the relocation of the separate parking garage building underground under the building.

Much emphasis was placed on environmental aspects. In order to receive the coveted LEED gold award, the developer u. a. to reuse rainwater, to use river water for cooling purposes and to protect birds from collisions with a special glass.

As a consequence of the 9/11 attack on New York, two emergency staircases were planned.

The spiral-shaped tower should achieve a total rotation of 360 degrees, with each of the 150 floors accounting for 2.4 degrees. It is said to be 610 meters (2000 feet ) high to the roof  . This would make it the tallest skyscraper in the United States and clearly tower above Chicago's Willis Tower (442 meters structural height, 527 meters with antenna), which is still the tallest American skyscraper , in all categories. The Chicago Spire would also be taller than the One World Trade Center in New York at 541 meters. At the time of the originally planned completion, the tower would be the second tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (828 meters).

Construction work and construction freeze

After the project was presented to the public in 2005 under the name Fordham Spire , construction began in June 2007. In autumn 2008, however, it was announced that construction would be stopped due to the financial crisis after most of the foundation was finished. The Wall Street Journal magazine reported in the fall of 2008 that construction work was expected to continue until mid-2009. However, after ongoing financial problems at the project developer Shelbourne Development , this deadline could not be met. It seems unclear whether and when work will continue on the tower. In December 2010, a press release was published that the property near Lake Michigan is in the possession of the bank with immediate effect and until further notice and that the bank is seeking to sell it.
