The Russian half-mask helmet is a protective weapon from the Rus region , today's Kiev . The type is assigned to the Russian type IV helmets. This helmet type was approximately 1150 - 1250 used.

description

The helmet is made of iron and bronze . The helmet shell was assembled from three individual parts and has vertical ribs that run the entire height of the helmet and serve to reinforce the helmet shell. A face protection is riveted to the front of the helmet and provided with openings for the eyes. A nasal iron is attached to this half mask , which runs like a hook over the area of the nose. Holes are made around the entire lower edge of the helmet and on the edge of the face mask, which are used to attach a chain guard to protect the face, neck and neck. The outside of the helmet was silver-plated with leaf metal . Much of the silver plating peeled off over time. Several of these helmets have been found to date. The sites were Lykovo ( helmet of Yaroslav Vsevolodovich ), Nikolskoie, Gorodishe, Nogaisk and Kiev.

Another helmet of this type that was found, the helmet from Kiev, was roughly identical in construction, but did not have the ribs on the helmet shell. It can be dated to the time of the Mongol conquest of Kiev.

The Nikolskoie helmet could not be clearly classified as a Russian helmet shape. There is a possibility that it is of Tatar origin. Two other helmets were found in the Kurgan of Gorodishe, but they were irreparably destroyed. One of these helmets was found along with a skeleton that was still holding a sword in one hand. These helmets also had the chain guard in front of the face.

Another was found in the Kurgan of Nogaisk. A silver plate about 13 cm long was attached to the front of the dome. On it was a picture of St. Procopius with the inscription “St. Prokop ”underneath.

The type IV helmet class is specific to Russia and its function is comparable to the European Bascinet .
