Part of the 262-kilometer route runs parallel to the Ramal C-14 railway line ( tren a las nubes ), while in Chile it continues as Ruta Nacional 23 towards San Pedro de Atacama and Calama .
The road leaves the Valle de Lerma behind Campo Quijano and leads along numerous hamlets (such as Santa Rosa de Tastil ) to Los Patos, where it joins the Ruta Nacional 40 (Argentina) . After a further 11 kilometers, the city of San Antonio de los Cobres is reached. From here it leads along the border between the provinces of Salta and Jujuy past some ghost towns in a north-westerly direction to the Paso Sico (4082 m).
