Ruth Gonseth (born May 31, 1943 ) is a Swiss doctor and politician ( Green Party ). She represented the canton of Basel-Landschaft in the National Council from 1991 to 2001 .

Career

Gonseth graduated from high school in Aarau and then studied medicine in Friborg and Bern . As a dermatologist , she opened a practice in Liestal in 1977 . In 1987 she co-founded the Doctors for Environmental Protection Association , which campaigned against air pollution, among other things.

Political activity

Ruth Gonseth began her political career as a Liestaler residents' councilor (1989–1990) and district administrator (1990–1991). In 1991 she was elected to the National Council as the first member of the Basel Greens. In the National Council she advocated the careful handling of genetic engineering and the protection of water quality, while human rights were a focus of her interventions in foreign policy. In 2001 she announced her resignation and Maya Graf moved up for her. Today she is a member of the Green Panthers of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Development policy and philanthropic engagement

Even as a high school student, Ruth Gonseth was interested in developments outside of Switzerland and organized a student exchange with the Ivory Coast . Since 2009 she has been active as president of the Shanti Med Nepal association , which supports various aid projects in Nepal . Among other things, she set up a district hospital in Ratnanagar .
