The industrial town of Ruwais (also Ruweis, Arabic الرويس al-Ruwais ) was founded in 1982 and is a city in the United Arab Emirates . It is located in the western region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on the Gulf Coast , around 270 km west of the city of Abu Dhabi, southeast of the Jabal az-Zanna peninsula on the E11 motorway, and extends over an area of 218 km². The population was 15,511 at the 2005 census. Ruwais is divided into the industrial and settlement complex Ruwais, built and operated by the state petroleum company " Abu Dhabi National Oil Company " (ADNOC).
The industrial complex consists of natural gas liquefaction plants, oil refineries, fertilizer factories, power plants and, a little further away, the Jabal az-Zanna oil loading station on the peninsula of the same name. The 1500 MW large power plant with seawater desalination plant Shuweihat at the western end of the peninsula still belongs to the village of Ruwais.
The settlement complex south of the Jabal az-Zanna peninsula includes the infrastructure of a small town with two banks, post office, telecom and three supermarkets as well as other shops for everyday needs. Landmarks are three blue, mushroom-shaped, 30 m high water reservoirs. The ruling family also maintains a palace there. Only ADNOC employees or their relatives live in the settlement. The infrastructure is maintained by ADNOC.
