Ryanair flight 4102 is a daily flight operated by the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair . On November 10, 2008 , the aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Rome Ciampino Airport due to a bird strike . Ten people were injured.
the accident
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft took off at 6:30 a.m. in Frankfurt-Hahn for the flight to Rome . During the approach to the airport, there was a bird strike that severely damaged the nose of the fuselage and the engines . Despite the failure of both engines, the machine reached the runway and touched down at 07:56. The landing gear was severely damaged during the hard landing, but the aircraft remained rollable, so that the aircraft could be brought to a stop at the end of the runway after leaving the runway for a while. During the evacuation of the passengers via emergency slides, the left main landing gear buckled and thrust through the wing with great force . The Boeing 737 then showed such severe structural damage that the seven-month-old machine had to be written off.
Accident investigators found remains of starling birds in the engines and therefore announced, also because of the accident on US Airways flight 1549 , that the CFM 56 engines would be checked to make them permanently safer against bird strikes.
