The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2005 based on the name of the bay of the same name. It is named after Charles Dudley Ryder (1902–1940), second mate on the Penola during the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) led by the Australian polar explorer John Rymill .
