Ryszard Janusz Bender (born February 16, 1932 in Łomża ; † February 24, 2016 ) was a Polish historian and politician .

Life

Bender taught at the Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II . As a historian, he mainly researched the January uprising (1863/64), the causes of which such as B. the November uprising (1830/31) and its effects up to the present.

In 1976 Bender was instrumental in founding the Club of Catholic Intelligence . Even as a student, Bender was close to the Catholic lay organization Znak . When this dissolved in 1976, Bender and some like-minded people continued to uphold these ideals. As Neo-Znak they then went on in 1980 in Polski Związek Katolicko-Społeczny .

Between 1976 and 1980 Bender was a member of the Sejm under Edward Gierek . When the emergence and strengthening of the Solidarność union made it necessary to reshuffle the government, Bender lost his place in the Sejm and was only able to return in 1985 (under Wojciech Jaruzelski ). He held this mandate until 1989. In 1991 he was elected Senator , but with early dissolution of parliament left after two years; from 2005 he held the mandate in the House of Lords again until another premature dissolution for two years. Elected for the third time in the 2007 parliamentary election, he remained in the Senate until the end of the four-year legislative period.

In 2007 he was accused of making anti-Semitic statements ; Among other things, he claimed that Auschwitz concentration camp was a labor camp and not an extermination camp .
