Sándor Szalontay (born July 3, 1990 in Santiago de Cuba , Cuba ) is a Hungarian cyclist who is primarily active in short-term disciplines on the track as well as in road cycling .

Athletic career

In 2011 Sándor Szalontay first attracted international attention when he finished third behind Francesco Ceci and Eric Engler in a U23 race in the Vienna Ferry Dusika indoor stadium in the 1000 meter time trial . In 2014 he was four times Hungarian champion on the track, in the sprint , keirin , 1000-meter time trial and in the team sprint with Barnabas Toth and Peter Prájczer . In 2016 he won the prologue of the Tour de Hongrie . In 2017 he became national sprint champion. Szalontay competes in track cycling under difficult conditions in Hungary, as there is no track on which he can adequately prepare for international races. In autumn 2017 he was determined to sell his bike and give up competitive cycling.

Against this background, the VeloClass Velence team came together in 2018 to support Szalontay, what is currently the most successful Hungarian track cyclist. He is trained by the former Czech cyclist and European champion Pavel Buráň . In May of that year he set a new Hungarian record over 200 meters with a flying start in Moscow with 9.672 seconds and was the first Hungarian to stay under ten seconds over this distance. At the national track championships in 2018 and 2019, he again won three titles.
