São Saturnino is a Portuguese municipality ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Fronteira with 278 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

History and sights

Romans settled here in the times of the Lusitania Province . Among the numerous finds from this period is a Roman burial site, the archaeological site of which can be visited Ara funerária na Herdade de Val de Paredes . In addition, Roman mosaics, roof tiles, ceramics and other remains of a Roman villa were found in the Herdade de São Francisco estate, which is now used as a rural tourism .

There are hardly any documents on the history of the present-day location. It was probably created in the course of the settlement policy after the conclusion of the Portuguese Reconquista in the 13th century, by the Knightly Order of Avis , to which the area was subordinate, and who founded or repopulated a number of places in the region. In the course of time, the focus shifted from the actual place São Saturnino to today's capital of the municipality, Vale de Maceiras.

The parish church Igreja Paroquial de São Saturnino is a listed building.

São Saturnino is the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ). It essentially consists of two localities:

• São Saturnino
• Vale de Maceiras

Vale de Maceiras is to be regarded as the main town. It has a larger population and the municipal administration is located here. The community name has been retained for historical reasons.
