Cabeço de Vide is a Portuguese municipality ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Fronteira with 1063 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds such as tools, weapons and antas prove the presence of humans since the Neolithic . During the Roman administration, the place was part of the province of Lustanien . The Roman road from Emerita Augusta (today Mérida) to Olisipo (today Lisbon ) ran here, and the remains of some villas were found. The local medicinal springs were already used by the Romans.

The name supposedly goes back to a battle that took place here either during the conquest of the Moors from 711 or during the subsequent Reconquista . Many unburied corpses remained on the battlefield, and the survivors did not regain their decayed health until they fled to a nearby hill where they could breathe clean air. The name Cabeço de Vida (German roughly: rock head or hill of life) remained thereafter.

In 1160 King D. Afonso Henriques conquered the place for the young kingdom of Portugal . After the Arabs recaptured it in 1190 and it was severely destroyed in the process, the place was rebuilt and fortified on the nearby hill after the definitive Christian reconquest in 1240 by King D.Sancho II . In the 16th century the crown gave the place to Diogo de Azambuja . Earlier, not clearly documented city rights were renewed in 1512 by King D. Manuel I in the course of his administrative reforms.

The district was often ruled by the Vaz de Camões family, who lived here for a long time, and from which the Portuguese national poet Luís Vaz de Camões († 1579) arose in earlier times . In the course of the Restoration War (1640–1668), Cabeço de Vide suffered severe damage and subsequently lost its inhabitants. The previously independent circle lost increasing importance until it was finally dissolved on October 24, 1932 and briefly incorporated into the circle of Alter do Chão. Since December 21, 1932, Cabeço de Vide has belonged to the Fronteira district.

Culture and sights

The local monuments include a large number of historic houses, including that of the Vaz de Camões family. Other architectural monuments are various stone fountains, the train station and other historical public buildings, and the castle ruins. A number of sacred buildings are also listed, in addition to the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Cabeço de Vide (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Candeias ) and the Renaissance church Igreja do Espírito, which dates back to an earlier church from the 13th century and was largely rebuilt in the 16th century Santo (German: Heiliggeistkirche), with its stone cross in front.

The historic town center is also a listed building as a whole, as is the historic thermal baths Termas de Sulfúrea .

traffic

Since the closure of the Ramal de Portalegre railway line in 1990, the place has no connection to the country's railway network. However, it is integrated into the national bus network of Rede Expressos .

The place is connected via the national road N369 with Monforte, 19 km away, and the IP2 (here also European route E 802), via which the district capital Portalegre to the north, and Estremoz with its motorway connection to the motorway A6 south, can be reached after 30 km each .

economy

The community is dominated by agriculture. Animal husbandry and the cultivation of grain and vegetables are important occupations, including the production of olive oil and cork .

Tourism is also important for the municipality. In addition to facilities for individual tourism , especially in rural tourism houses, the Termas de Sulfúrea thermal baths , which have been known for their medicinal properties since the Romans, should be mentioned in particular .
