Historical background

A life-saving medal was last awarded in Saxony in 1918 . With the establishment of the Lifesaving Honor Mark Foundation in 1996, the Free State of Saxony resumed this old tradition.

Foundation purpose

A life-saving badge of honor is donated by the Free State of Saxony as state recognition for a rescue from danger to life.

Shape and texture

The life-saving decoration made of fine silver shows on its front the coat of arms of the Free State of Saxony with the raised inscription: FREISTAAT SACHSEN . The reverse bears the inscription in the upper semicircle: FOR RESCUE FROM DANGER and shows three interwoven oak leaves in the lower semicircle. The first and last name of the rescuer are engraved in the center with the year of the award of the award. The lifesaving badge has a diameter of 30 mm and is worn on a gold-framed green-white-green ribbon. A miniature on a green-white-green ribbon can be worn in place of the life-saving badge. The details are determined by the system. (see graphic on the right)

With the amendment of the statutes in 2011, the form was simplified somewhat: The inscription FREISTAAT SACHSEN is no longer embossed on the front , and the binding has been changed from gold to silver. The old version should be issued until the stocks are used up.

Carrying method

The Saxon life-saving honor is worn on the left side of the chest on the medal buckle as a ribbon medal. However, in its original size only on the day it is awarded or on appropriate festive occasions. Otherwise only as a strap on the strap buckle. Details are regulated by an administrative regulation of the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior, which was published in the Saxon Official Gazette.

Ranking in the Saxon award system

The high status of the life-saving honor is also reflected in the ranking of the Saxon award system, in which the life-saving honor follows in third place behind the Saxon Order of Merit and the Constitutional Medal.

First award

On September 15, 1999, the then Minister of the Interior of Saxony, Klaus Hardraht , awarded the Saxon life-saving honor for the first time. The then mayor of the municipality of Pobershau, Christoph Kraus, received the life-saving badge for his work during the severe weather disaster in the district of the Middle Ore Mountains .

Further awards

On April 2nd, 2009 the students Marko Feichtinger and Erik Lehmberg and the student Alex Oschatz were awarded the life-saving honor of the Free State of Saxony by the Mayor of Dresden, Helma Orosz . On August 14, 2008 they saved Alexis Bruce from drowning in the Dresden-Leuben gravel pit, which had already disappeared from the surface of the water. The award was also given for their attentive behavior and their quick and courageous commitment.
