Söder (Helsingborg)

Location of the Söder municipality in Helsingborg.

Söder is a district of the Swedish city of Helsingborg . Söder is located in the city district of the same name, with 3,665 inhabitants (as of 2005) .

The district emerged in the 19th century, a time of economic boom in Helsingborg. Due to the expansion of the port and the construction of the railway to the south, industrial companies settled here, south of the city center, in the vicinity of which apartments were built for the people who work there. The spatial separation of the workers' residential areas in the south of the city from the bourgeois districts in the city center and north of it led to a social segregation in the city that still exists today. Söder is characterized by a comparatively high proportion of foreigners (mainly from the former Yugoslavia and Lebanon ) and a high unemployment rate.

There is not much left of the original development in Söder. The workers' settlements were partly replaced at the beginning of the 20th century, partly in the 1960s and 70s by multi-storey concrete and brick buildings. The low attractiveness of the district is attributed to these, but also to the large thoroughfares, the proximity to the port, the industry and the neighboring thermal power station .

There are plans for upgrading Söder under the motto “Söder in Change” (“ Söder i förändring ”), but these have only been partially implemented so far - as part of structural change , including the establishment of the University's “Helsingborg Campus” Lund in the former production building of the rubber product manufacturer Tretorn , the new building of the local court ( Tingsrätt ) and the conversion of an old sugar factory into an office building of the furniture company Ikea . Plans that have not yet been implemented concern the relocation of the railway systems running through Söder underground and the creation of living space in the southern harbor.
