South-north divide

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a south-north gradient is in Germany referred to the fact that on the basis of numerical surveys an economic and demographic differences between the provinces exist or regions.

The richer federal states of Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria and Hesse come to the fore, in whose urban and rural districts a predominantly lower unemployment rate , higher GDP per capita and lower debt level predominate. An economic south-north divide can also be observed within the new federal states .

The south-north divide is also one of the main reasons why the population growth rate in southern Germany is consistently positive and higher than in the other federal states.

It is in contrast to the north-south divide that prevailed at the time of industrialization in the 19th and 20th centuries.
