features

The southern great spotted insect is strongly built. Its thick abdomen tapers to a point, the thorax is saddle-shaped extended backwards. The latter characteristic is particularly pronounced in the male. The antennae are about as long as the body. The lower legs of all pairs of legs have small spines. The wings are tiny and yellow-brown in the male, but cannot be seen in the female, but are covered by the thorax. The dark drawing varies greatly. The basic color is light green. A light band runs horizontally over the sides of the abdomen and a dark band on each of the individual segments. There are yellow areas on the pronotum of the male, which are often framed in dark colors. The upper half of the head and the outside of the legs are black to dark gray in color. The sides of the body and the insides of the thighs have dark spots.

Way of life and distribution

The southern great spotted insect lives mainly in damp, heavily overgrown meadows, but it can also be found on alpine meadows and in dry wasteland. It occurs at altitudes of up to 1800 meters. Individuals from greater heights are usually not as conspicuously colored as their conspecifics in the valleys. The distribution area extends from Macedonia via Serbia and Montenegro , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Slovenia and Croatia to northern Italy . The singing consists of short high notes. The adults occur from May (or a little later) to September.
