The Southern Prachtkotinga ( Cotinga maculata ), sometimes also referred to as Collar Kotinga, is a species of bird in the ornamental bird family .

description

The southern Prachtkotinga reaches a length of 20 centimeters. In the male, the upper side is dark cobalt blue and the back is slightly speckled with black. The throat and middle of the abdomen are light purple and contrast with a blue chest band. The rest of the underside and the under tail-coverts are blue. The wings and tail are black. The medium and small arm covers have wide blue hems. The female's plumage, which is dark brown on top, is speckled with white. The underside is white with tan speckles. The iris is dark and surrounded by an indistinct white eye ring. Legs and beak are black. The young birds have not yet been described.

distribution

The southern Prachtkotinga occurs in southeastern Bahia and in northern Espírito Santo . Before 1940 it was also found in Minas Gerais and in the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil .

Way of life

The southern Prachtkotinga inhabits the canopy of primary, moist rainforests on the Atlantic and is often observed at the edges of clearings. Its diet consists of seeds, berries and fruits, but also of caterpillars and other insects. A breeding female was observed in October.

status

In the past, the feathers of the southern kotinga were used in the handicrafts of the Indians and nuns of Bahia. The demand for caged birds also endangers its existence. The main threat is the destruction of the Atlantic rainforest , so that its habitat is now highly fragmented. The main protected areas where it still occurs are Estação Vera Cruz and the Monte Pascoal National Park in Bahia, and the Sooretama Biological Reserve and Linhares Forest Reserve in Espírito Santo. The southern Prachtkotinga is listed in Appendix I of the CITES agreement .
