Southeast Europe Society (Munich)

The Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft e. V. (SOG) is an association founded in 1952 by Fritz Valjavec with headquarters in Munich . It is financed by the German Foreign Office .

The aim of the SOG is to promote scientific, economic and cultural relations with the countries of Southeast Europe . It organizes conferences, awards grants and publishes the magazine Südosteuropa Mitteilungen .

The Rudolf Vogel Medal Journalist Prize, which has been awarded by the Society for twenty years, was renamed the South Eastern European Society's Journalist Prize in 2013 . The Swiss journalist and historian Andreas Ernst had opposed being awarded a prize that was named after a "Nazi propaganda journalist ".

In January 2013 a working group presented a concept for a critical review of the history of the SOG, its organizational predecessors before 1945 and its history after 1945. The first results were presented in spring 2014.

The first president from 1958 until his death in 1960 was the SPD politician Wilhelm Gülich . He was followed by the politicians Rudolf Vogel (1960–1965), Walter Althammer (1965–2000) and Gernot Erler (2000–2020). The current president of the SOG is the politician Manuel Sarrazin from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen .
