Andreas Ernst (journalist)

Andreas Ernst (* 1960 in Zurich ) is a Swiss journalist and historian . He is an expert on the recent history of Southeast Europe .

Career

Ernst grew up in Zurich. He studied social and economic history, media sociology and constitutional law in Berlin and Zurich . In Zurich he received his doctorate in comparative European social history. From 1990 to 1995 he was a Fellow at the Institute for European Social History at the Humboldt University in Berlin and until 1992 research assistant at the Socio-Economic Seminar. He then became a lecturer at the Sociological Institute of the University of Zurich and at the Media Training Center in Lucerne (MAZ). From 1995 to 1999 he was deputy head of the Public and Society Research Department .

Journalistic work

In 1999 he went to Skopje with his family , and from 2001 as a correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and the NZZ am Sonntag . Since 2002 he has been the Southeast Europe correspondent for the Belgrade based newspaper .

The state-building of Kosovo is of particular interest . In collaboration with the Department of Eastern European History at the History Department of the University of Zurich, he conducted the research project “Institution, State Identity, Society. The state-building process in Kosovo since 1999 as an interplay between international and local actors », which was financed by the Swiss National Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research. Ernst also published on comparative social history, public history and nationalism. Since 2012 he has been a visiting fellow at the Center for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz .

In 2013, Ernst was offered the Rudolf Vogel Medal for Journalists by the Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft (SOG) . Ernst refused to accept a prize named after the "Nazi propaganda journalist" Rudolf Vogel , he became aware of this fact through Wikipedia . It was not until the Presidium renamed the award to the Journalist Award of the Southeast European Society that Ernst accepted the award on February 9, 2013.
