The atonement cross in 2014

The atonement cross in the Hundisburg district of Haldensleber is a small memorial in the form of a cross, popularly known as the "murder cross". It is registered in the local register of monuments as a legally significant minor monument. The cross is on the corner of Schulstrasse and building site at the “Alte Schule” stop on the arterial road to Rottmersleben . The exact age and reason for the installation are unknown; However, the construction date is probably around 100 years before the popular year 1576.

history

The cross was probably erected in the middle of the 15th century as atonement for a manslaughter committed. The vernacular attributes the reason for the cross to the manslaughter of Busso von Alvensleben (1553–1576), the second eldest son of Ludolf X. von Alvensleben . He was killed in a dispute in a Thuringian castle belonging to the Asseburg family in 1576 . The Asseburgs were sentenced in court to pay the dead man's father a fine of 2,000 thalers, to which he added another 1,000 thalers and donated to the construction of the poor houses in Hundisburg and Neugattersleben . However, it is doubtful that the stone goes back to the death of Alvensleben; the erection of an atonement cross was also not part of the (traditional) agreements of that time.

The information board on the stone cross reads:

“A folk tale tells that a murder once took place here. Busso von Alvensleben and a gentleman from Asseburg both pursued a strong stag. At the same time both met at the dead animal. A quarrel broke out, and von Asseburg pierced his pasture companion with the hunting spear. As a penalty for the crime, the murderer had to pay 2000 thalers. The father of the murdered Ludolf von Alvensleben increased the sum by 1000 thalers and donated the hospitals in Hundisburg and Gätersleben. According to written records, this murder took place in Wallhausen in 1576. Since the shape of the Hundisburger Cross is around 100 years older, this part of the legend seems questionable. "

In 1870 the cross was still in its original shape, with the upper part being attached to the lower part by means of vertical iron straps connected by round anchors on the front and back. In the 1950s, only the shaft was left. It served as a myriameter stone until 1958 . Around 1960 a new top was made and put on. When the search for the original upper part of the cross was carried out in 1958, a 15 cm long copper case was found in the base near the shaft, which is said to have contained a parchment certificate. Due to its old age, the parchment text could no longer be deciphered or restored. At the beginning of the 1990s, the upper part was replaced again and a new location was found.

layout

The cross consists of two parts and is around 1.1 meters high and around 70 centimeters wide. Only the shaft is original. Both parts were made from various types of sandstone . When moving in the early 1990s, the previously used concrete base was removed
