The S-178 was a conventionally powered submarine of the Whiskey class of the Soviet Navy .

The submarine sank on October 21, 1981 after the collision with the fish catcher RFS Refrischerator-13 near Vladivostok within a few minutes. 18 sailors were killed on board the submarine immediately. Of the eleven men who were thrown into the water in the collision, seven were rescued by the fish catcher. 26 survivors were able to save themselves in the front part of the submarine. Two days later they decided to climb from a depth of 35 m. Six other crew members died.

The boat was lifted on November 15, 1981 and later scrapped.
