Shunting tractors of the SBB

Shunting tractor Te III

Shunting tractors are small shunting vehicles on Swiss railways .

Type description

According to the type designation of Swiss locomotives and railcars, shunting tractors bear the series designation "T". The drive types are differentiated in the index.

  • Ta - vehicles that get their energy from batteries
  • Te - vehicles that get their energy from the contact line
  • Tm - vehicles with an internal combustion engine

There can be vehicles with multiple indices. A Tem is a shunting tractor with an electric drive from the overhead contact line and an internal combustion engine that allows you to drive on tracks without overhead contact lines. Most vehicles have an index based on their performance class using Roman numerals. The index "I" refers to the weakest, the index "IV" to the strongest class.

After the changeover to the UIC numbering scheme , the tractors have a "2" in the first place, followed by a breakdown by type of traction (second place) and performance class (third place). The new performance classes are not congruent with the old performance classes of the Roman numerals. For this reason, only tractors that have undergone a renewal or conversion are renamed. For example, converted Tm III and Tm IV are now jointly referred to as Tm 232 .

The division of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) into divisions in 1999 was accompanied by a reorganization. This made many tractors superfluous, with the inefficient tractors being more severely affected. The low top speed of some tractors is also a hindrance. A vehicle today should be towed at least 80 km / h, better 100 km / h, so that it can be transferred with a regular freight train. That is why many tractors have been and are being scrapped. Some tractors were bought from the SBB by siding owners.
