The SC-1 class was the first class of anti-submarine boats ( S ubmarine c Haser ) of the United States Navy . It comprised a total of 441 boats (originally planned for 448, SC-1 to SC-448 ), which were built between 1917 and 1919 and used against German and Austrian submarines in the First World War .
The Navy dispatched 121 SC boats to Europe during the war , operating along the British and French coasts and in the Mediterranean near the Otranto lock ; 100 more boats were built for France . The remaining models in the class were responsible for securing the US east coast . In the course of the war nine boats (six American, three French) were lost, mainly due to accidents.
After the war ended, the majority of the boats were sold in 1921/22 (many to the metal dealer Joseph G. Hitner ) and probably scrapped shortly afterwards. Some models were used briefly by the US Coast Guard , four were given to Cuba . Few boats were still in service during the Second World War .
