The SC Hellas Magdeburg eV is a traditional swimming club from Magdeburg .

1904 to 1945

It was founded on August 3, 1904 by 19 founding members who had previously belonged to the 1896 swimming club . In the same year, the club joined the German Swimming Association and started competitions. In the founding year, 40 victories were achieved at national level. The water polo team's first games followed in December . In the following years the club became one of the most important swimming clubs in Germany . In 1906 Hellas was already the most successful club in the German Swimming Association with 91 victories. The club members created a sports facility, the Hellas outdoor pool , from the Griesemannschen gondola pond on Magdeburg's Schöppensteg . BothAt the 1908 Olympic Games in London , Arno Bieberstein won the gold medal in the 100 m back and Kurt Behrens the silver medal in jumping. In 1909 the association moved to the Hellas-Bad in Magdeburg. Members of the association held multiple world records. In 1910 Gerhard Arnold swims the 200 m back in a world record of 2: 59.8. In 1912 Kurt Bretting set a new world record in the 100 m freestyle with 1: 02.4. At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 , Kurt Behrens won bronze in jumping.

Erich Rademacher swam for Hellas from 1913 until the 1930s . He set a total of 30 world records and achieved a total of 998 competition victories. Other well-known athletes of the club are Joachim Rademacher , Max Amann , Emil Benecke , Gustav Frölich and Otto Cordes . One of the trainers at the time was Rudolf Brewitz . The club also opened up to other sports. In 1925 the tennis section got its own tennis courts. After Germany could not take part in the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1924, Hellas won gold and silver again at the Games in Amsterdam in 1928 . Between 1930 and 1942 Hellas was the most successful German swimming club and won a total of 30 German championships. In 1943 Hellas achieved the 5000th victory in an official competition.

1945 to 1990

In 1945 SC Hellas was no longer allowed to take part in competitions in the Soviet occupation zone . The members had to join other associations. The association then moved its headquarters to Braunschweig and continued to work there.

Since 1991

After the end of the GDR , Hellas returned to Magdeburg in 1991. Since 1993 there has been a youth department again. In 2001 the bowling department was founded. In 2002 the number of members again exceeded 200. In memory of the great tradition of the association, the city of Magdeburg named a street, Hellasweg, after him. Since 2008 there has been a swimming event in honor of Olympic champion Arno Bieberstein, the Arno Bieberstein Cup. The number of members has now increased to 350. With Ulli Reinhardt, Hellas has a successful master swimmer who was three times German champion and twice vice European champion in the age group 65+ in 2013 alone.
