SERMIG

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SERMIG is the collective term for a Roman Catholic association of believers and stands for “Servizio Missionario Giovani” ( German : youth in the service of mission or youth mission service). The ministry was founded in Turin in 1964 and included on the list of associations and associations of the faithful recognized by the Holy See . Worldwide, the Youth Mission Service has 52 full and 176 extraordinary members, and the number of volunteers amounts to approximately 6,000 activists.

history

Ernesto Olivero (* 1940) and his wife gather a group of young people in Turin for the first time. Together with the missionaries of the Diocese of Turin , they decided to volunteer for missionary work and to support the clergy in their work. The then Archbishop of Turin Cardinal Michele Pellegrino (1903–1986) supported this project and, together with Giorgio La Pira (1904–1977), formed the working group into a spiritual community . In 1983 the community took over an old arms factory in Turin and redesigned the building. With great commitment, the “Arsenale della Pace” and the “Casa della Speranza” ( German : “Arsenal of Peace and House of Hope”) were built. SERMIG has had a partnership with the Monastery of San Francesco in Assisi since 1997 and is committed to its spiritual heritage.

Self-image

The heart of SERMIG is the brotherhood , who live and work in small shared apartments of celibate and married men and women. They form the active contact points to the needy people and cultivate a spirituality in the spirit of the word of God. The center of life is shaped by prayer , prayer is understood as hope and practiced in the expectation of a kind of return. The celibate communities pursue their goals by creating suitable structures, organizing peace missions and holding training weeks. Some members choose the consecrated life , they live according to the evangelical counsels and choose a life that is inspired by Our Lady .

Works

The 24/7 arsenals of Peace and Hope, as the communities call themselves, are places of prayer and work. Volunteers distribute food and care for those in need day and night. The Arsenal of Hope was opened in São Paulo in 1996, and in 2003 the Ecumenical Arsenal of Encounter was launched in Amman . The most recent work is the “University of Dialogue”, a “wandering university” that was named after Cardinal François Xavier Nguyên Van Thuân and is intended to educate young people in peace and justice.

Organization and expansion

The general assembly is called annually, it accounts for the brotherhood and nominates the council. The Brotherhood Council is the governing body of SERMIG and consists of five to seven members, including the President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. There is also a church assistant , the council of elders and a supervisory board . Membership is divided into 52 ordinary - who are accepted after training and take responsibility - and 176 extraordinary members. The headquarters of the Presidium is in Turin, and several thousand helpers are deployed from here.
