The locomotive 040 DF 1 was a unique piece of the French state railway SNCF . It was built as a prototype with a diesel-hydraulic drive in 1952. Manufacturer of the machine was the work of railway vehicles of the company Régie Nationale des Usines Renault (RNUR) in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges . In 1962 it was redrawn as BB 60041.
History and description
The 040 DF 1 was created at the same time as the 040 GA 1 gas turbine locomotive , with which it shared many components, based on the type 5070, of which Renault built 18 copies for the various gauges of the countries of the former French colonial empire . Outwardly, it differed from the 040 GA 1 primarily through a lower roof structure and a different arrangement of the round side windows. Both locomotives were painted dark green with a narrow yellow "belly band".
With the 040 DF 1, two independent drive groups acted on one of the two bogies . Two V-12 engines from Renault with an output of 310 kW each and fluid couplings from Ferodo were used .
On April 29, 1952, the 040 DF 1 was put into operation. In the 1960s it was stationed at the Alençon depot , from where it was used in freight traffic between Argentan and Le Mans .
Whereabouts
The locomotive was shut down on December 15, 1970, and in 1977 it was scrapped in Le Mans. The prototype remained a one-off, and SNCF subsequently opted for diesel-electric propulsion for its diesel locomotives .
