SN 1572 ( B Cassiopeiae , B Cas ) was a galactic supernova of type Ia that appeared on November 11, 1572 in the constellation Cassiopeia . It reached a brightness of −4  mag . SN 1572 was discovered by Tycho and Sophie Brahe . They also coined the term “nova” (from Latin stella nova : “new star”) because they thought it was a new star. With this first observation of a supernova by European astronomers it was shown that the fixed stars are not immutable either.

The remnant of SN 1572 is 3C 10. As a candidate for a surviving companions this supernova is considered Tycho G .

A light echo from the Nova was observed in 2008.

With the observation of SN1572 by Tycho de Brahe, the prevailing worldview was called into question. Aristotle had formulated the hypothesis that changes only occurred on earth, whereas events in heaven were eternally the same. This hypothesis had prevailed up to the time of Tycho de Brahe and had become part of generally accepted knowledge. By observing the supernova, Aristotle's hypothesis was empirically refuted and thus the need for a new worldview became evident.

Multi-channel infrared image from the WISE satellite shows the remains of SN 1572 in the upper left corner.
