SOUSY

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SOUSY (abbreviation for SOUnding SYstem for atmospheric structure and dynamics ) is a research radar of the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy MPAE (today Solar System Research , MPS) for the investigation of the high atmosphere .

Investments

The system works on a frequency of 53.5  MHz with a transmission power of 600  kilowatts . A field of 196 four-element Yagi antennas is used as the transmitting antenna .

The SOUSY radar was located near Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains until 2001 and was operated by the MPAE in Katlenburg-Lindau . The antenna field there took up an area of 3,150 square meters. In July 2001 the whole system was transferred to Peru and assembled in Jicamarca, Lima , and is operated by the Jicamarca Radio Observatory of the Instituto Geofisico del Peru . A mobile radar system, the Sousy Svalbard Radar (SSR) - also developed and built by the institute - is installed in Adventdalen , Spitsbergen, and is operated by the Tromsø Geophysical Observatory at Tromsø University .
