SUPERG! RL is an English-language pop song written by a team of writers led by Dimitris Kontopoulos and interpreted by Stefania Liberakakis . With the title she should represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

On February 3, 2020, Liberakakis announced that they would represent Greece at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. One month later, on March 1st, the title and its music video were presented as part of a show on Elliniki Radiofonia Tileorasi . SUPERG! RL was composed and produced by Dimitris Kontopoulos and the Arcade team of authors . They wrote the text together with Sharon Vaughn, who wrote the Grand Prix titles What Love Is and Prison from the same year. Kontopoulos was also involved in Prison . It was the first time he worked with Arcade for SUPERG! RL . In the beginning it was difficult to find a suitable song that would do justice to the interpreter's age and personality.

The recordings took place at Aris Binis in Athens . Andrei Konoplew was responsible for mixing in Moscow . The mastering was done by Chris Gehringer in New York .

Music and lyrics

SUPERG! RL is described by Greek radio as a contemporary up-tempo song with ethnic elements. Konstantinos Karydas, the director of the music video, described it as a dynamic and danceable title, Lieberakakis himself spoke of dance pop in the style of Ariana Grande . The song encourages young people to believe in themselves and chase after their dreams. He also deals with the interpreter's experiences, which had to reconcile her singing career and her obligations as a student.

Music video

The video, directed by Konstantinos Karydas, was filmed in Athens . It shows Liberakakis as a student who develops supernatural powers and masters flying. The student she falls in love with is played by Michael Tabakakis.

“We came up with a story with surrealistic elements. We followed a young woman who finds the strength to embrace her special abilities in a society that perceives her as an outcast. It is a journey to explore her inner strength. "

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Greece should have appeared with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled. The choreography should be developed by Fokas Evangelinos.

reception

Irving Wolther said the song will "certainly have an effect on the young audience". Similar comments were made at Eurovisionary. The song sounds like it was written for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest . However, one is convinced of the vocal abilities of the singer. Wiwibloggs said that the song as a Greek ESC contribution was one of the better attempts in recent years. It is suitable for radio, but you have the feeling that Greece could do better. The German blog ESC Kompakt criticized the weak first verse and the inappropriate instrumentation in the chorus. In contrast, the singer's charisma was praised.
