The 1906 Bad Nauheim sports club , or SV 06 Bad Nauheim for short , was a sports club from Bad Nauheim in the Wetterau region . By far the most important department of the club were the footballers, who played in what was then Gauliga Hessen in the 1935/36 season and thus brought top division football to the spa town for a year . After 102 years of existence, the club merged on July 1, 2008 with SG Ostend 1960 Bad Nauheim to form Spielvereinigung 08 Bad Nauheim .

The early years

Football fever broke out in Bad Nauheim for a short time as early as 1895 when some young people under the direction of Ludwig Gatzert chased the round leather in the high forest. With Gatzert's job-related move to the neighboring city of Frankfurt , the football enthusiasm quickly came to a standstill.

It wasn't until ten years later that football came back to Bad Nauheim. When, on a typical Sunday afternoon, some teenagers began to get bored, one of them suggested they give football a try. The young man originally came from Hanau and, according to the club's history, was previously a member of Hanauer FC 1893 . A second man from this group immediately took up the suggestion and reported on the hustle and bustle of some young people in the neighboring town of Friedberg . The interest of the other young people was quickly aroused and so it was agreed to go to Friedberg in large numbers on the following Sunday to attend a training session of the FC Merkur there on the Friedberger Seewiese. The young people came into contact with each other very quickly and immediately agreed to play against each other.

The young people from Nauheim were so taken with the "English sport" that just a few days later, on March 31, 1906, they founded the Viktoria 1906 Bad Nauheim football club . Due to the high influx, a second team could be set up a year later. In 1914 the club name was changed to Sportverein Bad Nauheim, founded in 1906 .

The biggest success

In the early 1930s, the team was systematically and qualitatively reinforced. Probably the most important import was the player-coach Rolf Eyrisch , who came from Saarbrücken in 1934. In the following season 1934/35 the greatest success in the club's history was achieved with promotion to the then first-class Gauliga Hessen . The ascent was crowned on June 16, 1935 with the inauguration of the club's own sports field (corner of Rosbacher Strasse and Wintersteinstrasse), today's Waldstadion. But the first division adventure ended after one season with relegation and return to the Upper Hesse district class.

VfL Bad Nauheim

In October 1945 the large association VfL Bad Nauheim was founded, to which all previously existing independent associations of the community were affiliated as departments. This is how SV06 Bad Nauheim became the football department of VfL Bad Nauheim. This club gained national fame through its ice hockey department, which was established in 1946.

From then on, the footballers played in the lower leagues and did not get beyond the district class, which they, interrupted by a few brief stays in the district class A below, mostly belonged to between 1948/49 and 1966/67. Her greatest successes are the runner-up in 1949/50 and third place in 1953/54 in the Frankfurt-East district class. Between 1967/68 and 1973/74, the team then belonged to the district class A, before being relegated to the district class B, in which it remained for the next ten years.

Franz Beckenbauer in Bad Nauheim

The official inauguration game of the converted Waldstadion took place on May 10, 1964 in front of 2,000 spectators between VfL Bad Nauheim and Viktoria Aschaffenburg and ended with a 3-2 victory for the home team. Before that, there was an "unofficial" inauguration game between the A youth teams of VfL Bad Nauheim and FC Bayern Munich , which the Munich team decided 13: 1 in their favor. Franz Beckenbauer , who scored ten goals, played a decisive role in this runaway victory .

New establishment of SV 06 Bad Nauheim

During the stay of the VfL Bad Nauheim soccer team in the B-class, VfL Bad Nauheim suffered considerable financial difficulties, which had caused its ice hockey department. As a result, the other departments left the hockey-dominated club. The football department resigned in January 1979, and it was re-established as SV 06 Bad Nauheim on March 30, 1979.

From now on things went up again in terms of sport, so that SV 06 even managed to return to the Friedberg district league, which they had been in since 1998/99 (after brief stays in the 1990/91, 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons) belonged again permanently.

Merger with the SGO

But there was a new hardship in the form of an acute player shortage, which besides SV 06 also plagued SG Ostend Bad Nauheim. Although the two Bad Nauheim clubs were irreconcilable in the past, the insight into a collaboration for the benefit of both was great enough. At a meeting of the two board members in November 2001, it was decided to found a football game community. This took in the 2002/03 season as SG Bad Nauheim the place of SV 06 in the Friedberg district league. The clubs initially retained their independence, mainly because SV 06 wanted to celebrate its 100th anniversary. However, the merger was only a matter of time and was completed in early 2008 on July 1, 2008.
