The sports club Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe 49 e. V. (short form: SV BVB 49 e.V.) is a sports club in Berlin-Lichtenberg , which became known nationwide through the success of its women's handball team.

The Union

In 1949 the BSG Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe was founded as a company sports association of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe in East Berlin . After the political change, the legal form was changed and the sports association Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe 49 was founded as a registered association . The approximately 800 members are organized in eleven departments: gymnastics and athletics for seniors, football , handball , bowling , athletics , table tennis , volleyball , diving , a shawm orchestra and recreational sports .

Spreebirds (until 2009)

They qualified for the Bundesliga in the last East German league season 1990/91 . Even if the guest appearance in the top division only lasted a year, the club has developed into a reliable address in German women's handball over the past 17 years. As champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North , the club rose again to the Bundesliga in 1997, this time they were there for two years. In 2001 they won again the championship of the 2nd Bundesliga North , one year Bundesliga followed. In the 2004/05 season, the Berlin women qualified for the relegation games for promotion to the Bundesliga, but failed in the first round against southern champions Frisch Auf Göppingen (23:24, 25:31). Overall, the club has played in the 1st Bundesliga for four years since 1991 and in the 2nd Bundesliga for the remaining 13 years .

Spreefüxxe (from 2009)

For the 2009/10 season , the women's teams of SV Berliner VG 49 and Reinickendorfer Füchse joined forces for Bundesliga games to form BVB Füchse Berlin (Spreefüxxe) and immediately moved into second in the promotion play-offs.

Greatest successes

The greatest success in the club's history as BSG Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe was winning the FDGB Cup and the GDR handball cup in 1973.
