The Sport Vereniging Britannia is a football club from Piedra Plat in Aruba . In addition to the men's team, which plays in the Division di Honor ( honor division), the first division of Aruba and has been Aruban champion four times, there is a women's team and youth teams for boys and girls.

history

founding

In the 1950s, many young people played football in the settlements around Piedra Plat. In August 1957, about 20 of these young people met at Mama Chuchu (Johana Sofia) Croes Lampe's house and decided to set up a club under the direction of Ripoldo Croes as a gathering point for all these young people. At this first meeting, the colors for the playing clothes (yellow-red jersey , blue pants) and the name were determined. At the time, several teams in Aruba had names referring to countries successful in football: Holandia was popular, as was Colombia ; the youngsters decided to choose their name after the "island of birth" of football, Great Britain . The club's founders bought a piece of land as a football field, and on October 12, 1958, the club was officially launched.

Successes and failures in the league

In April 1959 the first team of SV Britannia played for the Juliana -Beker (Juliana-Pokal) and only lost in the final against the Dutch Marines , the team of the Dutch Navy . On May 16, 1959, the first official game took place in Piedra Plat against SV Estudiantes from Oranjestad , which was lost 4-1. However, the game was scored on the green table in favor of SV Britannia, as Estudiantes fielded an unregistered player.

In their first season in the third division of Aruba ( 2nd division ), the team was fourth in 1959. As early as 1963, the 2nd division succeeded in becoming champions, the first promotion to the second division was perfect; However, he was promptly relegated after only one season. Until 1980, the supporters of Britannia had to be patient until the ascent succeeded again; but also this time the direct relegation followed as bottom of the table. In 1983 the team made the third promotion; this time Britannia managed to stay in the second division for more than a season and only to slide back to the third division after the second year.

After the renewed championship in the 2nd division in 1989, the team remained constant in the 1st division , the second highest division. After finishing second in 1994, he was fourth in the 1999 season; before the playoff round for the championship, Britannia had even been in first place. What was already indicated here became reality in 2001: SV Britannia rose to the honor division, the top division.

Honor division and championship

Britannia finished third in the first year in the honor division. In the 2003/04 season Britannia was after the regular points round table leader, but finished second after the semi-finals and was ultimately only third in the championship. In the 2004/05 season Britannia was after the points round only in second place behind the Racing Club Aruba . This time, however, Britannia was able to prevail in the playoffs: with 2-1 and 1-0 wins, the team became champions of Aruba for the first time. In 2006 the team could not repeat this; Britannia made it into the final as fourth in the points round, but lost in the finals against the now twelve-time champions SV Estrella with 0: 1, 4: 1 and 1: 2. In 2007 Britannia was again first after the points round with 47 points after only one defeat in the 18 games of the season, but ended up only in third place after the playoffs. In 2009, 2010 and 2014 the championship was celebrated again.

International competitions

SV Britannia has twice participated in the CFU Club Championship , the club championship of the Caribbean Football Association. In the 2005 competition, the Aruber lost in the first round against Surinam champions SV Robinhood . In 2006/07 the first round was played in group matches; Britannia finished fourth and last in Group D after just one draw against the representative of the US Virgin Islands , New Vibes , and losses to SAP FC ( Antigua and Barbuda ) and San Juan Jabloteh ( Trinidad and Tobago ).
