The SWANS Initiative is a voluntary organization that supports students and young academics with an immigrant background and Women of Color in starting their careers. SWANS offers, among other things, training courses, networking events and support with job applications. In addition, she regularly portrays successful women from the target group in academic professions in her role models blog .

As the first and only organization in German-speaking countries that specifically supports students and young academics from refugee and immigrant families who grew up in Germany, it has received awards from Chancellor Angela Merkel and the European Economic and Social Committee , among others . SWANS is financially supported by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Federal Integration Commissioner .

structure

Since the first seminar in March 2017, a team of volunteers has come together who are committed to SWANS in addition to work, studies and / or family. As it is institutionalized in the DSI Deutschlandstiftung Integration gGmbH , the initiative is non-profit. The idea for the initiative came as part of the mentoring - Scholarship GO YOUR WAY of Germany Foundation integration, where some of the SWANS team members have come to know.

aims

SWANS has set itself the goal of helping highly qualified women with a migration background to appropriate political, cultural and economic participation. The reason for this is that their target group is underrepresented in German decision-making positions in terms of their share of the population, continues to be disadvantaged on the labor market according to the Federal Statistical Office and, with the same qualifications, has to apply up to seven times as often as a woman with white skin and a German-sounding name.

Prizes and awards

Since the beginning of its activities in 2017, the SWANS Initiative has been nominated and awarded by various institutions:
