The Saalbahnhof is a train station in Jena , in the Jena-Nord district , on kilometer 25.50 of the Saalbahn .
history
The station, which is 144.32 meters above sea level, was put into operation on April 30, 1874 with the opening of the steam train line between Großheringen and Saalfeld. The Saalbahnhof quickly became Jena Central Station, which was the city's most important long-distance stop in the north-south direction from 1909 until the provisional Jena Paradies stop was opened on September 26, 1999. All trains on the Berlin – Munich route had an intermediate stop here.
The former 2nd class station is now classified as station category 6. Between May 2006 and March 2007 the hall station was adapted to the new requirements and all facilities on the platform area that were no longer considered to be urgently needed were demolished, including the platform roof of tracks 2/3, which was replaced by shelters. Today the regional trains stop in the Saalbahnhof and in the direction of Großheringen / Naumburg, Saalfeld and Pößneck.
As a result of changes in use and ownership, the reception building and its ancillary facilities became the Jena cultural station . The former station building is a listed building.
