Kulturbahnhof Jena, traces of its time as a reception building are still visible today
Inner courtyard of the Kulturbahnhof Jena, meeting and event location

The Kulturbahnhof Jena is a culture and event center in the former reception building of the Saalbahnhof in the Thuringian city of Jena . The main building and parts of the interior design there are under monument protection. The protected interior design also includes the original wall design by Kurt Hanf , an important artist for Jena and the region.

location

Jena train stations, location Kulturbahnhof Jena is analogous to Saalbf

The Kulturbahnhof Jena is located in Spitzweidenweg not far from the city center of Jena , the main building of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Thuringian University and State Library . The location makes it part of the Jena-Nord district .

History and concept

In 1999 the association '' JenKultig '' rented the former reception building of the Jenaer Saalbahnhof from DB Station & Service . Since 2000 this has been used for sustainable cultural work under the name Kulturbahnhof Jena. After the station building was finally no longer needed for rail operations in 2007, it went into private ownership in 2008, including its ancillary facilities. The new owner Tilo Hermes, a teacher at a Thuringian high school and internationally active musician, has since continued the concept of a cultural station as a private sponsor and has ensured that the property is preserved.

With today's Kulturbahnhof Jena, the concept of a facility for non-profit activities, free cultural work and a socio-cultural center was successfully implemented.

Buildings and cultural assets

Monument protection

For historical and artistic reasons, the reception building of the hall station, including its fixed, wall-mounted equipment, the interior design of the counter hall and the restaurant as well as the mural in the underpass from the hall were registered as cultural monuments by the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology in the monument book. According to the Thuringian Monument Protection Act , they are considered sources and testimonies that make human history tangible and tangible for posterity. They are placed under special state protection. The object is listed in the Jena monument map with No. 184 under the architectural and garden monuments.

Reception building

The building was designed according to a Bauhaus concept by the Dresden design office of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The opening as a reception building was on April 24, 1965.

Counter hall

Mural in front of the underpass, cultural monument in the Jena culture station

Kurt Hanf left his mark on the counter hall (reception hall), which has remained in its original state to this day. His huge mural made of aluminum strips shows figures who used to introduce rail travelers to the core areas of the city (university, Zeiss and Schott ).
The hall also has extraordinary acoustics, which are similar to those of a church. The acoustic and visual effect of the hall was u. a. clearly illustrated by an '' audio-visual scientific art performance ''.

underpass

In the access area to the former platform underpass, there is another artistic mural made of mosaic stones, which shows the molecular structure of penicillin .

restaurant

There was previously a restaurant on the upper floor, which was operated as a delicatessen in connection with the Intershop (trade) . The interior design of the walls with wood paneling was retained. Today the Jazz Cafe is in this room.

Basement

The former bunker of the transport police was preserved in the basement of the Kulturbahnhof. It is over 100 m² and was redesigned into a gallery in 2011.

From October 27 to 31, 2006, shooting for the children's film KRIMI.DE was carried out in and around the Kulturbahnhof . In Series 7 of KRIMI.DE Investigators Team Jena - Please , the Kulturbahnhof was very friendly for the recordings of the Jena police station. The film was first broadcast on October 2, 2007 in KiKA .

use

Example of creative potential in the Kulturbahnhof Jena (Cosmic Dawn)

Art and culture work

The culture station works among other things painters, nude painters, graphic artists, sculptors, caricaturists and artisans. The cultural workers run small offices, artistic studios, a recording studio and several band rehearsal rooms here.

Theater & concerts

The theater hall (formerly Mitropa restaurant) is used for concerts by multinational music groups, cabaret performances and theatrical performances or rehearsals for them. At the beginning of 2014, Cosmic Dawn expanded the theater hall and has been using it since then together with the student association Med-Club Jena eV, which creates a meeting place for students of all kinds there.

Education & meeting place

Culture and language workshop in the Kulturbahnhof Jena (interkult eV)

The cultural station with jazz cafe, courtyard and garden is also used for education, student activities and as a multicultural meeting place. Examples are the Chinese language tutorial for the language center of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena or theses at the Bauhaus University Weimar .

Round tables, celebrations, events

Regular activities also include international round tables, celebrations, social events, book readings and literary evenings.

Club activity

Associations such as JenArt eV , JenKultig eV and interkult eV have their headquarters or organize events in the Kulturbahnhof . The Association of Chinese Students and Scientists Jena eV uses the multicultural location for office hours.

Exhibitions and special events

With the gallery in the former bunker, the Kulturbahnhof makes art accessible to the general public. Art and cultural encounters are here impressively through exhibitions or z. B. made clear by special presentations.

Living

The upper floor of the old transport police building was converted into a shared apartment for artists and students.

Controversies & Reviews

The Kulturbahnhof is missing as a cultural facility in the Jena-Nord district development concept (status 2011). The conversion of the reception building or strategies and measures up to 2017 to upgrade it are mentioned, although a cultural station has been in operation since 2000.

With the loss of the importance of the hall station , the sale and a lack of plans, various problems arose, which led to criticism and complaints. There was already controversy when it was sold by Deutsche Bahn. In addition, the building was structurally neglected by the previous owner and was largely in a neglected condition. Deutsche Bahn AG is still responsible for the platform and access roads, while the city is responsible for the outside areas.

Newspaper reports give the impression that the hall station continues to have an uncertain fate and that one now needs a perspective for the hall station. Many Jena people see the building of the old hall station as an unrenovated, unsightly concrete block. Few of them know about the creative potential inside today's Kulturbahnhof. Since 2000, a colorful hodgepodge of artists and cultural workers who have set up studios, rehearsal and work rooms has established itself here.

The condition of the listed private building and the lack of funding are viewed as grievances.

The concept for the urban redevelopment area Jena-Nord is based on an inventory with the reception building of the Saalbahnhof as a still existing part of the railway system. Although the reception building of the hall station was sold in 2008 and is therefore de facto no longer a railway system, the status of the deedication procedure is still unknown: De jure , it will be one until it is completed.
