Saarschleife marathon

The Saarschleife Marathon is a former marathon running event near Merzig , which was organized between 1998 and 2016 by the Tri-Sport Saar Hochwald association. The date of the event was August or September. In addition to the marathon, there was also a half marathon .

The start of the marathon was at the Saar Bridge between Besseringen and Schwemlingen, the start of the half marathon in Dreisbach . The route leads first on the towpath on the left bank of the Saar downstream along the Saar loop to Mettlach, where you crossed the Saar , and then on the tow path on the right bank upstream in the inner radius of the Saar loop to Besseringen. While the second lap began there for the marathon runners on the same route, the half marathon runners went straight to the finish at the historic town hall of Merzig.

In 2007 the route of the marathon and half marathon did not run along the outer radius of the Saar loop, as safety work was carried out on the rocks on this side of the river as a result of falling rocks. The marathon started at the town hall of Merzig, led along the Saar beyond Mettlach to behind Saarhölzbach , where the turning point of the route and the start of the half marathon was. From there it was the same way back to Merzig.

The last edition of the Saarschleife Marathon took place in 2016.
