Sabina Chebichi

Sabina Chebichi (born June 13, 1959 ) is a former Kenyan middle-distance runner .

Sabine Chebichi belongs to the Elgeyo ( Kalendjin ) ethnic group . In 1973, the pupil Sabine Chebichi attracted attention in the sports world, as at a sports meeting in Kericho barefoot and in the absence of a vest with a petticoat clothed 800 m in 2: 16.8 min and 1500 m in 4:40 min ran. Her only training until then was the several kilometers long route to her school.

At the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974 she won bronze in the 800m in 2: 02.61 minutes and was fifth in the 1500m in 4: 18.56 minutes. This made her the first Kenyan woman to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The boycott of Kenya prevented participation in the 1976 Olympic Games .
