Sabulotes aegrotata - melanistically darkened specimen

Sabulodes aegrotata is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae).

features

The moths reach a forewing length of 17 to 23 millimeters in the males and 20 to 26 millimeters in the females. The drawing and coloring of the species is variable, the species is the only Sabulodes species that produces a melanistic shape. In the male, the coloring of the head and the apex (enough Vertex ) of off-white to yellow brown. The front of the head is dorsally narrow, dark grayish brown and ventrally pale yellow-brown. The color of the thorax varies dorsally from monochrome whitish to yellow-brown or ocher, ventrally it is whitish and, in some specimens, yellow-brown or ocher-colored behind. The abdomen is dorsally dark cream-colored or pale yellow-brown and provided with a few interspersed brown or dark brown scales . Ventrally the abdomen is paler. The color of the head, thorax and abdomen is similar to Sabulodes caberata .

The color of the upper forewing ranges from cream-colored or pale yellow to ocher-colored, brown or black-brown in melanistic specimens. The forewing pattern resembles Sabulodes caberata , in some specimens it may be missing. It is weakly developed, the transverse lines are pale gray-brown and highlighted by brown dots on the veins . The fringed scales are either colored in the same way as the front wing or they have a brown spot next to the veins. The undersides of the wings are colored similarly to the upper sides and are somewhat paler. The drawing is missing or is a distinct dark brown area near the apex . The transverse lines are pale gray-brown.

The genital armature of the males is similar to that of Sabulodes caberata , but differs in the longer and slimmer uncus . The Gnathos is provided with a smaller median bulge and a small bulge. The valves each have an exposed costalarm that is bent at right angles. They are smooth and have no nodules. The anellus is narrower in front, the rear process is wider, especially behind. The aedeagus has a low posteroventral bulge, which is provided with three to 14 short, needle-shaped teeth. In some specimens, the teeth are arranged in two to three rows. The vesica extends laterally , when it is everted, to the right side. It is wide near the aedeagus and has small thickenings behind and a large dorsal thickening with a small dorsal sac. The vesica tapers distally .

The genital armature of the females is also similar to that of S. caberata and differs from it as follows: The lamella postvaginalis is 1.1 to 1.4 millimeters long. It is narrower and less circular in cross section. It has either a rounded or a tapered, pointed rear end. The sterigma is relatively long and narrow. It is concave at the back and more or less wrinkled near the post-vaginal lamella. The bursal duct is shorter and about 1.0 to 1.1 millimeters long. It is narrower and less thickened at the back. The seminal duct arises from a more clearly formed lobus-shaped sac on the left side of the bursal duct. The corpus bursae is provided with an elongated sclerotized band posteroventrally . The apophyses posteriores are 1.6 to 2.1 millimeters long.
