Gerhard Wegner (economist)

Gerhard Wegner (born September 18, 1956 in Peine ) is a German economist and university professor .

Career

Gerhard Wegner graduated from the University of Göttingen with a degree in economics , social sciences and philosophy , which he completed in 1982 with a diploma in economics. He then moved to the University of Mannheim as a research assistant , where he received his Ph.D. in 1989 under Manfred E. Streit. received his doctorate. Wegner worked as a research assistant and private lecturer at the German private university Witten / Herdecke until 1997. There he completed his habilitation in 1995. In 1996 he was a visiting professor at New York University.

1998 Wegner was followed by a call to the Chair of Economic Policy at the University of Bochum . After two years in Bochum, Wegner accepted the call to the newly founded University of Erfurt in 2000 . There he accepted the chair for institutional economics and economic policy at the political science faculty .

Wegner is among other employees at the Hamburg Institute of International Economics and in 2010 to the Social Promotionskolleg market economy of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation appointed. He is also the chairman of the Wilhelm Röpke Institute and a member of the Association for Social Policy . In the association he is a member of the "Evolutionary Economics" committee and the "History of Economics" committee. In June 2019 he was elected Chairman of the Committee on Evolutionary Economics. He will hold this office in 2020 and 2022. In 2015 he belonged to the group of members, including two members of the board of directors, who left the Friedrich A. von Hayek-Gesellschaft due to differences in content.

In May 2018 he signed the appeal The euro must not lead to the liability union! , which was initiated by the economists Dirk Meyer , Thomas Mayer , Gunther Schnabl and Roland Vaubel .

Research priorities

Wegner deals with the theory of economic policy, order theory and policy . The focus is on political and economic liberalism , new institutional economics , but also systemic competition in the European Union and evolutionary economics . Wegner also deals with environmental policy and innovation policy .
