Sachal Vasandani

Sachal Vasandani (* 1978 in Chicago ) is an American jazz singer .

Vasandani grew up in a music-loving family. He studied economics at the University of Michigan , where he made his master's degree in 1999, but also took music lessons and was honored as "Collegiate Jazz Vocalist of the Year" in the Down Beat . Then he moved to New York City , where he worked intermittently as an investment banker. He sang with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis and released his debut album Eyes Wide Open ( Mack Avenue Records ) in 2007, followed by We Move in 2009 and Hi-Fly in 2011 (all on Mack Avenue), produced byJohn Clayton . On Hi-Fly he sometimes sings with Jon Hendricks and is represented with his own songs.

Vasandani's second album received critical acclaim in the New York Times and led to tours in the USA and Europe (including Switzerland, Germany and Russia) in 2009. The third album also received positive attention. He also worked with Pyeng Threadgill, Gerald Clayton ( Life Forum ), Andy Bragen / John Ellis ( Mobro ), and Sean Jones ( Kaleidoscopes ).

In 2010 he won the Down Beat Critics' Poll in the rising star category as a singer.
