Location of the Saxony-Anhalt barracks in Saxony-Anhalt

The Sachsen-Anhalt-Kaserne is a location of the Bundeswehr in Weißenfels , Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The barracks in Zeitzer Straße was designed as an artillery barracks for the army in the mid-1930s when the Wehrmacht was rearming. Construction began in 1936 and ended with the beginning of the Second World War in 1939. At the end of the war, only workers from the Leuna works were housed in the completed buildings . From the beginning of the 1950s it was completed for the barracked people's police and used by the National People's Army from 1956 . As part of the state unification of the GDR and FRG , it was handed over to the Bundeswehr in 1990 . From 1965 to 1991 it was called the Thomas Müntzer Barracks . During this time the motorized rifle regiment 18 “ Otto Schlag ” and the anti-aircraft missile regiment 11 “Georg Stöber” of the 11th motorized rifle division were stationed there. On November 4th, 1993 the barracks got its current name.

Medical Command III, which was disbanded at the end of 2012, provided the majority of the soldiers stationed in Weißenfels. His main task was the central management of the entire medical service in Defense Area III , which included the federal states, Saxony-Anhalt , Thuringia , Brandenburg and Berlin . Other offices were subordinate to the Medical Command III , such as the 31st Lazarettregiment in Berlin and the Bundeswehr hospital there . As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , parts of the disbanded medical command at the site were reused for the establishment of the new medical service support command .

The location today

The barracks is the Bundeswehr's largest medical facility. In addition to the medical service support command, it includes the medical regiment 1 and the medical supply center in Weißenfels. There is also a Bundeswehr service center at the site , but it is located in a separate property outside the barracks.
