Saʿid al-ʿUwairan ( Arabic سعيد العويران, DMG Saʿīd al-ʿUwairān , according to English transcription often Saeed al-Owairan , also without the article Owairan ; * August 19, 1967 ) is a former Saudi Arabian soccer player .

Career

al-Uwairan played exclusively for Al-Shabab , a club from the capital Riyadh, throughout his professional career . Due to his talent, European clubs were also interested in his commitment, but Saudi Arabian players were legally prohibited from playing abroad.

National team

He played 75 times for Saudi Arabia , scoring 24 goals. With the national team he took part in the World Championships in 1994 and 1998 .

He became known worldwide for his goal against Belgium at the 1994 World Cup , when he hit four opposing players after a solo over half the place. This goal was voted sixth in an internet poll to determine the World Cup Goal of the Century by FIFA . Subsequently, he was nicknamed "Desert Maradona " and in the same year al-Uwairan was named Asia's Footballer of the Year , after he had become world goalscorer in 1993 .

Private

During Ramadan 1996, Uwairan was arrested by the Saudi police for drinking alcohol and subsequently banned for one year. After his suspension, he ran again for Al-Shabab and the national team, for which he participated in the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 1998 World Cup .
