history

Emergence

The establishment of the new Saenuri party began in February 2017 with the establishment of a preparatory committee and the first submission of the party formation documents to the National Electoral Commission. At the beginning of March it was announced that the party would be called the Saenuri Party. The ruling Grand National Party was renamed the Saenuri Party during the February 2012 election campaign of Presidential candidate Park Geun-hye , and retained that name until February 2017, when the party was renamed the Freedom Party of Korea during the impeachment proceedings pending against Park .

The establishment of regional associations began in mid-March 2017, just a few days after the Constitutional Court removed Park Geun-hye from office on March 10. The first regional association was founded on March 16 in Daegu , the birthplace of Park Geun-hye, with, according to its own information, 1500 members. One day later the regional association was founded in the South Korean capital Seoul . On April 5, registration with the National Electoral Commission was completed and the party was officially established. Two representatives of civic initiatives that support the park, Kwon Young-hae and Jeong Kwang-taek , were appointed as the first party chairmen . Park loyalist and National Assembly member Kim Jin-tae of the Freedom Party of Korea congratulated the Saenuri Party on its establishment by saying, "The Freedom Party of Korea and the Saenuri Party will campaign for a free democracy because they have the same origins."

On April 9, 2017, Cho Won-jin announced his resignation from the Freedom Party of Korea and on April 10, he would join the Saenuri Party, giving the Saenuri Party its first representative in the National Assembly. Cho Won-jin added in his press release that some MPs in the National Assembly of the Korean Freedom Party are considering switching to the Saenuri party and an alliance with the Bareun party , which split from the Korean Freedom Party in January, even more Would provoke MPs of the National Assembly to change.

2017 presidential election

When Cho Won-jin moved from the Freedom Party to the Saenuri Party on April 10, 2017, Cho Won-jin announced a possible candidacy for the presidential office to "prevent the formation of a grim left-wing government" and postponed the final decision to April 12.
