Saffo, ossia I riti d'Apollo Leucadio is an opera in two acts by the German composer Johann Simon Mayr based on a libretto by Simeone Antonio Sografi . It is about the poet Saffo ( Sappho ), who is unhappy in love with the hunter Faone. However, the latter is still mourning his deceased wife. The poet Alceo, on the other hand, loves saffo. The resolution finally takes place through an ambiguous saying of the Pythia .
The opera was commissioned by the Teatro La Fenice in Venice , where Johann Simon Mayr had played the violin for two years, for the 1794 carnival season and premiered there on February 18, 1794. It is Mayr's operatic debut, which brought the composer such a brilliant success that he was overwhelmed by commissions for composition and had written no fewer than 70 operas by 1814.
On August 31, 2014 the opera was performed in a concert in Neuburg an der Donau with members of the Bavarian State Opera and the Simon Mayr Choir & Ensemble under the direction of Franz Hauk .
