Sagrantino is an autochthonous Italian red wine variety .
It comes from Umbria and delivers heavy, strong red wines with plenty of tannins and extract. The most important growing area of Sagrantino extends from Collemancio (district of Cannara ) in the north via Assisi , Montefalco to Spoleto in the south. In the 1990s, almost 157 hectares of planted vineyards were raised. Growing in the province of Perugia is recommended .
The most important wines are simple, strong Montefalco DOC - red wine and the complex, excellent storable , sometimes strongly in youth tannin DOCG wine festivals Montefalco Sagrantino , of the types of wine "Secco" and " Passito is offered." The Montefalco Sagrantino Passito , which with a subtle residual sweetness and alcohol gradations of at least 18 percent by volume is somewhat reminiscent of matured port wines . For this purpose, the grapes are dried up like raisins on wooden racks.
Best qualities can be matured and stored for up to 25 years
The leading producers are Arnaldo Caprai in Montefalco , Còlpetrone in Gualdo Cattaneo and the Fattoria Colle Allodole in Bevagna .
