The Church of Saint-François-des-Cordeliers or Église des Cordeliers (German: Minoritenkirche ) in Nancy is the burial place of the Dukes of Lorraine . It is located right next to the Ducal Palace . The adjacent convent building is now part of the Musée Lorrain .

history

The church was built under Duke René II after the Battle of Nancy in 1477 at about the same time as the neighboring palace and was consecrated in 1487. The church was intended as the burial place of the dukes, who until then had been buried in the now defunct Saint-Georges collegiate church .

The Archduchess Marie Antoinette visited the chapel on the way to her future husband Louis XVI. In 1951 Otto von Habsburg's wedding took place here , and in 2001 the celebrations for his gold wedding .

architecture

The exterior of the very functional church is 73 meters long and only nine meters wide. The only nave was decorated with numerous windows and frescoes , one of which has been preserved on a yoke at the level of the choir .

On the side of the ship are the burial niches of the dukes, including that of Duke René II. Among the tombs, that of Philippa von Geldern , René II's wife, is noteworthy due to its design by Ligier Richier . The graves of Henri III can also be found here . de Vaudémont , Antoine de Vaudémont and Marie d'Harcourt (1398–1476), as well as that of Cardinal Charles de Lorraine de Vaudémont , who came from Florent Drouin . The engraver Jacques Callot and the painter Jean Le Clerc are also buried in the church. The altar has a multicolored retable from 1522, the large rose window from the classicism period shows the coat of arms of Lorraine. The wooden choir stalls from 1691 were moved there from Salival Abbey in the 19th century .

The chapel adjoining the choir dates from 1609 to 1612 and was built in the Italian baroque style. It has a dome with a trompe-l'oeil . This chapel contains the graves of the last Dukes of Lorraine from the Habsburg-Lothringen family .
