The St Mary's Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Sydney and seat of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Sydney .

Building history

The cathedral is located in the center of Sydney, Sydney City , and was planned in an unusual north-south direction because of the street grid. Hyde Park and St James Underground Station are to the west, the Government House to the north, The Domain to the northeast and Phillip Park to the south. The neo-Gothic building made of Hawkesbury sandstone is one of the largest churches in Australia, with its 74.6 m high towers it is only the fourth highest on the continent. The foundation stone for the first Gothic-style cathedral of St. Mary was laid in 1821 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie ; however, it burned down in 1865. The foundation stone for today's cathedral was laid in 1868. Construction of the nave began in 1913 and the crypt was completed in 1961. Two towers included in Wardell's original plan were not completed until 2000.

In 1932 Pope Pius XI gave the church . the title of a papal basilica minor and has the status of an architectural monument . She is the Mary Help of Christians ( Mary Help of Christians consecrated).

Organs

The history of the organs goes back to the 19th century. Today there are three instruments in the cathedral. The main organ in the stands under the large rose window was built from 1997 to 1999 by the organ builder Orgues Létourneau (Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec). It has 46 stops on three manual works and a pedal.
