history

In 1770, James Cook explored the area on his first voyage to the South Seas. On January 26, 1788, British ships of the First Fleet with around 1,000 men and women, including about three-quarters of convicts, arrived in Port Jackson under the leadership of Arthur Phillip . They founded Australia's first white settlement at the harbor. The new settlement was named Sydney in honor of then British Home Secretary Thomas Townshend Sydney .

The town was granted city rights on July 20, 1842. It included the districts of Woolloomooloo, Surry Hills, Chippendale and Pyrmont. In the 11.65 square kilometer area there were six districts, which were marked by border posts. A border post still exists in Sydney Square today. The city's boundaries have changed several times since 1900. In 1909 Camperdown and in 1949 Alexandria, Darlington, Erskineville, Newtown, Redfern, Glebe, Waterloo and Paddington were incorporated.

In 1968 the borders were changed again and many of these places became part of the new LGA Municipality of South Sydney . South Sydney was then again part of the City of Sydney between 1982 and 1988. After the spin-off of South Sydney, the City of Sydney was slightly smaller than originally at 6.19 square kilometers. On February 6, 2004, South Sydney was incorporated back into the City of Sydney. After the merger of the two LGAs, the area grew to 25 square kilometers.

administration

The City of Sydney is an administrative area (LGA = Local Government Area) that includes the actual inner city of Sydney (CBD = Central Business District) and the inner city suburbs of the Sydney metropolitan area. The current administrative structure was created after the following districts were combined with the CBD to form the City of Sydney on February 6, 2004: Pyrmont, Ultimo, Haymarket and Woolloomooloo.

The Council of the City of Sydney has ten members, nine councilors and a chairperson, who are elected by the residents of the LGA. Sydney City is not subdivided into districts, but comprises a number of neighborhoods.

The President of the Council is Lord Mayor . He is not only mayor of the LGA, but also fulfills the representative duties of a city mayor in Sydney.

From 1945 to 1964, the area was subordinate to Cumberland County , whose jurisdiction was limited to town planning .

The elected city council is responsible for a number of tasks entrusted to it by the New South Wales government. However, many tasks are performed by the state itself. This includes public transport, main roads, traffic surveillance, police, education from primary school level and the planning of large infrastructure projects.
