Sajith Premadasa (May 2011)

Sajith Premadasa ( Sinhalese සජිත් ප්‍රේමදාස , Tamil சஜித் பிரேமதாச ; born January 12, 1967 in Colombo , then Ceylon, now Sri Lanka ) is a Sri Lankan politician of the United National Party (UNP). He is the son of former Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa .

biography

Sajith Premadasa was born in Colombo to Ranasinghe and Hema Premadasa. At the time of his birth, his father, Ranasinghe Premadasa, was a Member of Parliament for the United National Party (UNP) for Colombo Central . The son attended St. Thomas' Preparatory School and then the Royal College in Colombo and Mill Hill School in London. He then studied at the London School of Economics , where he received a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1991 . He then began a master's degree in public administration entity ( Public Management ) at the University of Maryland and completed an internship in parallel ( internship ) at the United States Senate for Senator Larry Pressler ( Rep. , South Dakota ). During this time, on May 1, 1993, he received news of the assassination of his father, who was then president of Sri Lanka, by an LTTE assassin . As a result, the son broke off his studies and internship and returned to Sri Lanka. From 1994 he became politically active, initially as a district organizer of the UNP in the Hambantota district . In the same district or constituency, he was elected to the parliament of Sri Lanka in the 2000 general election. In the election he received the highest percentage of preference votes of all 196 constituency members. In the election in the following year he was re-elected and from 2001 held the post of Deputy Minister of Health in the UNP government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe . In the 2004 and 2010 elections , Premadasa was elected as a UNP representative in the Habantonta constituency, but remained in the opposition along with his party. After the UNP won the 2015 general election, Premadasa became Minister of Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs in Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's cabinet on January 22, 2015.

Since September 23, 2014, Premadasa has been vice chairman of the UNP.

In the run-up to the 2019 presidential election in Sri Lanka , Sajith Premadasa applied for his candidacy early on. After his UNP competitor Ranil Wickremesinghe renounced his candidacy on September 25, 2019, Premadasa was chosen by the UNP governing bodies as the UNP's presidential candidate on October 3, 2019. In the election he received almost 42% of the vote and was clearly defeated by his opponent Gotabaya Rajapaksa ( SLPP ).

Controversy

In October 2013 the Colombo Telegraph reported that Premadasa only obtained his BSc degree from the London School of Economics with an aegrotat ( i.e. not the usual honors 1st / 2nd / 3rd class , or with honors , or simply pass ). This meant that Premadasa had not completed the final examination due to illness, but had been awarded the degree by the university due to special circumstances or his previous achievements. When asked about this, Premadasa stated that he had measles at the time and had temporary paralysis of his legs.

Private

Premadasa married Jalani Daithya Jayawardena on July 23, 1999. He is a Buddhist.
