Ahmed Esad Pasha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sakızlı Ahmet Esad Pascha (* 1828 in Chios ( Turkish: Sakız ); † November 29, 1875 ) was an Ottoman statesman and grand vizier of the Ottoman Empire in 1873 and 1875. The nickname "Sakızlı" alludes to the origin of Ahmet Esad.

Life

Ahmed Esad Pascha was born on the island of Chios in 1828 as the son of Kolağası Mehmed Bey. In 1858 he graduated from the Mekteb-i Erkân-ı Harbiyye-i Şâhâne military school in Istanbul and became a protégé of Mehmed Fuad Pasha .

He was posted to Paris, where he served as military attaché and director of the Ottoman school. When Sultan Abdülaziz traveled to Paris with Mehmed Fuad Pascha in 1867, he also got to know the young Ahmed and was probably so impressed that he promptly ordered him back to Istanbul. Ahmed Esad rose quickly in the palace hierarchy and became a member of the Council for Military Affairs ( Dâr-ı Şûrâ-yı Askeriyye ; also "Council of War Ministers"). Then he was briefly commander of the Ottoman troops in Bosnia with the rank of Ferik . In 1868 he was provincial governor of Shkodra and in 1872 in Sivas . In the following, Ahmed Esad Pasha served as a serasker who wastophane müşiri ( " kit master" ) and Minister of the Navy. The Sultan appointed him twice as Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire: Ahmed Esad Pasha was appointed for the first time on February 15, 1873 and was in office until April 15, 1873. The first term of office was short because the young man's appointment was considered inappropriate by the Sublime Porte . Ahmed Esad Pasha then went to Konya as governor , then to Syria .

From April 26, 1875 to August 26, 1875 Ahmed Esad Pasha was again employed as Grand Vizier. After his release, he went to Aydın as governor . Ahmed Esad Pasha died on November 29, 1875 as governor of Vilāyet Aydın and was buried in Izmir .
